I’ve added this page because one of the easiest ways to reduce general anxiety is to drink more water!
We’re made up of about two thirds water and water is vital in regulating the body’s processes. These include transporting hormones, energy and nutrients as well as regulating things such as breathing, blood pressure and our nervous system.
Poor functioning of these systems can make us feel anxious.
Also, being even a little dehydrated leads to tiredness – and of course tiredness often leads to or worsens feelings of anxiety.
The fact is that most people who suffer general anxiety don’t drink nearly enough water. Yet they never deal with the problem because 1) they don’t realise they’re dehydrated, and 2) they’ve never been told there’s a link between anxiety and water.
It’s long been known that our “level of thirst” is a poor indicator of our “hydration levels”. Usually, by the time we start to feel thirsty we’ve been dehydrated for some time.
Worse still, people often think they are hungry when in fact they’re just dehydrated – this tends to lead to overeating, which not only worsens dehydration, but leads to weight gain!
The solution is to get into the habit of drinking more water.
Replace coffee, soda, fruit juices and smoothies with ordinary (preferably filtered) water. Aim for six to eight glasses spaced out regularly throughout the day.
Not only should you feel less anxious, but you should have more energy too!
